According to Fars, the operation began Wednesday, Aug. 19,
with the transport of an initial shipment of 50,000 metric tons of oil. The
shipment will be transported through Iran to Turkey and Afghanistan.
Hassan Rostamzad, deputy for economic affairs in Iran’s
Kermanshah province, said the launch of the railway transit route is an
important step toward expanding trade and regional transit. He said it will
also help increase the use of Kermanshah’s railway capacity for imports,
exports and the transit of goods.
Reports say key benefits of transporting oil by rail include
improved cargo security, lower energy consumption, reduced transportation costs
and less pressure on road traffic.
